FAQ
What is Tallow?
Tallow is a form of rendered animal fat, typically from 100% grass-fed and finished cows. It is packed with nourishing fatty acids, vitamins A, D, E, and K, and closely resembles the natural oils in human skin, making it an excellent ingredient for skincare (PMCID: PMC11193910).
"Since the composition of beef tallow is similar to natural oils produced by skin, it can be used as a moisturizer and is gentle on sensitive skin." - Mayo Clinic
Why Use Tallow in Skincare?
Tallow is deeply moisturizing, non-comedogenic, and rich in skin-repairing nutrients. It helps support the skin barrier, improve hydration, and reduce inflammation, making it ideal for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin (PMCID: PMC7019988).
Is Tallow Balm Greasy?
No, tallow balm absorbs easily into the skin without leaving a greasy residue. Because it closely mimics human sebum, your skin naturally recognizes and absorbs it efficiently (PMCID: PMC11193910).
Does Tallow Balm Smell?
Our tallow balm has a mild, natural scent, with olive oil being the most noticeable aroma. Since we use organic, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil as a key ingredient, its fresh, slightly grassy scent comes through more than the tallow itself. Because we carefully render our 100% grass-fed tallow, any natural tallow scent is very light and fades quickly after application.
If you're looking for a subtle fragrance, our Honey & Tallow Balm has a naturally sweet aroma from raw organic honey. For those who prefer an ultra-mild scent, our Unscented Tallow Balm is the best choice, offering deep nourishment with the lightest natural fragrance.
What if My Tallow Balm's Texture Changes or Melts?
Tallow balm may soften or melt in high temperatures (such as during the shipping process) but will firm up again once cooled. This does not affect its quality or effectiveness. It can also be re-whipped at home!
What Ingredients Are in Your Tallow Balm?
Our tallow balms are made with the highest quality ingredients, including:
- 100% Grass-Fed and Finished Tallow
- Organic First Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Raw Organic Honey (in our Honey & Tallow Balm)
- No preservatives, synthetic fragrances, or artificial ingredients.
What Is the Difference Between Your Unscented Tallow Balm and Your Honey & Tallow Balm?
Our Unscented Tallow Balm is pure and simple, perfect for those with sensitive skin or those who prefer no fragrance. Our Honey & Tallow Balm includes raw organic honey, which adds extra soothing and antibacterial benefits, making it great for healing dry or irritated skin.
How Do I Use Tallow Balm?
Tallow balm is incredibly versatile and can be incorporated into your skincare routine in several ways. Here are the top five most common uses:
- Face and body moisturizer – Apply a small amount to clean, damp skin to lock in hydration. Its rich composition deeply nourishes without clogging pores, making it ideal for all skin types.
- Healing balm – Massage a pea-sized amount into areas prone to dryness, such as elbows, knees, and hands. It provides immediate relief and long-term skin repair.
- Lotion alternative – Unlike water-based lotions that evaporate quickly, tallow balm creates a lasting moisture barrier, keeping your skin hydrated throughout the day.
- Baby skin care – Perfect for use on babies to soothe diaper rash, cradle cap, or dry patches. It is free from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances, making it safe for delicate skin.
- Stretch marks and scars – Regular use can help reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks by promoting skin elasticity and regeneration.
For best results, apply tallow balm to slightly damp skin to help lock in moisture and improve absorption.
How Often Should I Apply Tallow Balm?
As often as needed! Apply a pea-sized amount daily for moisturization or use throughout the day to target dry or irritated skin.
How Should I Store My Tallow Balm?
Store your tallow balm in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If you live in a warm climate, refrigeration can help maintain its consistency.
How Long Does Tallow Balm Last?
Since tallow is naturally stable and does not oxidize quickly, our balms have a shelf life of about 6-12 months when stored in a cool, dry place. Refrigeration can extend its freshness even further.
Can I Use Tallow Balm on My Face?
Yes! Tallow is non-comedogenic and absorbs beautifully into the skin, making it a fantastic natural moisturizer for your face. It helps balance oil production, soothe irritation, and promote healthy, glowing skin.
Is Tallow Balm Safe for Babies?
Absolutely. Our unscented tallow balm is a great natural choice for baby skincare, including diaper rash relief and overall skin hydration.
Can Tallow Be Used As Sunscreen?
Tallow alone does not provide sufficient SPF protection, but it does contain natural sun-resistant properties. Many people mix it with non-nano zinc oxide or raspberry seed oil to create a natural sun-protective balm. Tallow is also excellent for soothing sunburned skin.
Where Do You Source Your Tallow?
We only use 100% grass-fed and finished tallow from regeneratively-raised cows in Texas and Georgia from Shirttail Creek Farm and White Oak Pastures. Our sourcing provides the highest quality and most nutrient-dense product possible.
Is Your Tallow Balm Cruelty-Free?
Yes! We prioritize ethical sourcing, using only tallow from animals raised on sustainable, humane farms. Our products contain no synthetic additives or harsh chemicals.
Do You Offer International Shipping?
At this time, we primarily ship within the U.S., but international shipping may be available in the future.
